A Great Way to See North America’s Deepest Canyon!
Our scenic river tour offers a slightly calmer experience with class 1-3 rapids. This tour leaves from Pittsburg Landing and travels north to Cache Creek Historic Museum, this makes a great rest stop for our amazing homemade lunch. This tour contains lots of history about the Nez Perce, miners, settlers, and geology of Hells Canyon. You will see the Confluence of the Salmon River, the longest free flowing river in North America. These tours often see the full spectrum of area canyon wildlife.
A Jet Boat is the Best Way to Experience Our Beautiful Rivers
Famous for its beauty, Hells Canyon has limited access for people traveling through the area that do not have the time or ability to hike or raft. That means jet boats are the perfect option. Power boats have been operating in the canyon for over one hundred years and are the most efficient and exciting way to see Hells Canyon. We believe Hammer Down River Excursion tours are the best for several reasons.
To begin with, all tours begin in the heart of Hells Canyon! That means more time having fun and less time trying to get there. All our United States Coast Guard (USCG) certified boats are built specifically for what we do and offer safe and spacious seating for all our guests. We have the only tour boat with a bathroom on board that leaves from our location.
Our experienced and friendly USCG captains make a point to not only teach what we know about Hells Canyon but strive to get to know our guests at the various stops along the river. We want you to feel like you are spending a day in Hells Canyon with old friends.
What to Expect from Your Time with Hammer Down River Excursions
You can expect a wonderful day on the river! Unmatched fun with a team that goes to great lengths to give you the best experience possible. We run our Scenic tours year-round if we have the minimum number of people on our tour boat (6). During the winter our boats have curtains and heaters on board to keep you warm and comfortable. Winter tours offer a wonderful look at wintering herds of elk, deer, mountain goats, and bighorn sheep. Spring, Summer, and Fall all can be very warm and are the most popular due to the weather. Summer is usually warm and splashes from the river are a welcome refreshment. It is important to bring sunglasses, hats, and sunscreen along with a bag to keep things like your phone or camera dry. Do not worry if you forget something…we have a healthy supply of the necessities available in our office.
Do not overlook our home-made lunch. It is a perfect complement to your day on the river! We prepare Mom’s famous BBQ, sides, and dessert for all guests. We offer options for all diet choices and restrictions. Please just notify us at the time of booking.
How Long Does the Tour Last?
The “typical tour” takes about 6 hours but depending on the size of the group and how much exploring occurs at our stops, we could run a little longer or a little shorter. During our low water months July and August our start times may be later in the day due to flow rates from Hells Canyon Dam. White Bird is in the heart of Idaho approximately 4 hours from most major cities Boise, Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, Tri-Cities, and Missoula are all about the same travel time from White Bird, Idaho. You may want to consider spending a night or two in our area.
Explore the Area…Spend a Day or Two
If you are planning to stay in White Bird the night before your tour, there are a variety of lodging options. River View Cabins are right on the Salmon River as is the Salmon River Resort while the Confluence Resort offers easy access to Highway 95 and White Bird Motel puts you in the heart of downtown White Bird. Deer Creek pines RV park, Salmon River Resort and Swiftwater RV are all excellent options for our customers that are campers.
Find the Right Scenic River Tour for You
Choosing the right jet boat tour for you is especially important to get the most out of your time in Hells Canyon. Hammer Down River Excursions goes that extra mile to make sure you are spending the day in Hells Canyon with friends.
If your time is limited and your tour window happens to fall during a period that does not allow for powered tours on the popular Hells Canyon Dam tour, our scenic river tour will be a great fit as we are not impacted by the non-motorized restrictions on this part of the river.
While fun and adventure are important for all our tour customers, safety is our number one concern. All our USCG certified captains have the knowledge and training to operate our boats safely.
